printing iso-8859-2 characters from Mozilla (Netsape 6.x) for Linux usign GhostScript by converting unicode postscript to more conservative 8-bit postscript. It can be used even with older Netscape Communicator 4.x.
Pocesti originally supported only Czech characters, but
several programmers contributed patches with full iso-8859-2 support, so I simply had to release version compatible with entire Central Europe. I am sure this filter can be easily modified also for other character sets supported by GhostScript interpreter.

Work on Pocesti also guarantees, that future versions of Arachne for Linux will produce printer output which is more GhostScript-compatible, than Mozilla itself. In Linux, using GhostScript is the standard way to print on all postscript non-compatible printers (eg. common ink-jet printers), so GhostScript can be considered "Linux printer driver".
Implementation of Pocesti is nice example how open standards allow even end users to easily fine-tune their systems without having to wait for original developer to fix the bug - and not only in a way which works as standalane application, but which can be used as integral part of the system.
Combination of open source code and usage of existing, well defined, documented and easy to understood data formats is future of computing, at least from technical point of view. I hope that more companies in IT business will try to actively support and subsidize development of "tailored" open source tools and solutions.
